Significant Spread of H5N1 Infection Reaches Mainland Australia with Long-Nosed Fur Seal Case

BEACHPORT, AUSTRALIA / RankWire.AI / – Australia has officially identified H5N1 bird flu in a long-nosed fur seal found deceased at Beachport in South Australia. This incident represents the initial confirmed case of mammal infection linked to the outbreak on mainland Australia. Authorities revealed the laboratory results following prompt testing of the animal’s samples. This discovery broadens the mainland outbreak beyond wild bird populations for the first time. Officials added that no evidence of a cluster involving other ill or dead marine mammals in the vicinity has been found.

Australia confirms H5N1 in mainland long-nosed fur seal
Australia confirms H5N1 in a mainland mammal as the bird flu outbreak affects wildlife.

A member of the community reported the dead seal on August 19, noting it showed no visible injuries. Initial testing conducted by state laboratories yielded inconclusive findings, leading officials to submit samples for additional analysis. CSIRO’s Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness later verified the presence of H5 bird flu in the seal. Beachport lies on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, an area where infections among wild seabirds have already been documented. This region has become one of several coastal zones affected since H5N1 was detected reaching mainland Australia earlier this year.

By August 23, South Australia had recorded 194 confirmed H5 bird flu incidents, with 11 new cases reported on that day alone. These incidents included infections among greater crested terns, a gannet, a little penguin, a silver gull, and a black-faced cormorant. The state authorities now classify outbreaks as events, which may involve one or multiple animals at a single location. Nationwide, Australia had reported 298 confirmed positive H5 bird flu events by Sunday, with South Australia accounting for the majority of those detections.

Mainland Australia Faces Broader Impact Beyond Wild Birds

The outbreak on the mainland originated after H5N1 appeared in migratory seabirds in June 2026. Subsequent testing confirmed the virus in native, non-migratory seabirds, such as greater crested terns. Authorities observed a rising number of wild bird infections across several states, including a mass mortality event in South Australia involving more than 1,000 greater crested terns during August. The strain circulating in Australia is identified as H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b, which has impacted wild birds, poultry, and mammals elsewhere worldwide.

Despite these wildlife detections, officials have reported no cases of H5 bird flu in Australian poultry or other livestock sectors. The Health authorities maintain that the risk to humans remains low. To date, Australia has not recorded any locally acquired human cases involving the H5N1 strain linked to this outbreak. Experts emphasize that human infection generally requires close contact with infected animals or contaminated environments and advise people to avoid touching sick or dead birds and other wildlife.

Initial H5N1 Infections Were Detected in Remote Wildlife Locations

Previously, Australia confirmed H5N1 in southern elephant seals on Heard Island, a remote Australian territory in the Southern Ocean. These infections were verified through laboratory testing in November 2025, several months before the virus reached the mainland. Further tests later identified H5 bird flu in additional wildlife on the island, such as Antarctic fur seals and gentoo penguins. Consequently, the Beachport case marks the first confirmed mammal infection associated with the current mainland outbreak and the first in a native mainland mammal.

Wildlife monitoring continues as H5N1 remains active among seabirds along parts of Australia’s coast. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from sick or dead wildlife and to report any sightings, which can assist animal health teams in identifying new potential outbreaks and directing testing efforts. Ongoing surveillance across wildlife, agriculture, and public health sectors aims to track the outbreak’s progression. The confirmed case involving the Beachport seal broadens the spectrum of species impacted by Australia’s mainland H5N1 outbreak.
